If you are not a pro football fan, you are not living! Last night Patriots vs. Colts game was one for the record books. If it was the Super Bowl game, I would have been satisfied. It had it all- hard hits, fumbles, interceptions, dances in the end zone, display of true talents, triumph after being down, and city celebrations!
I am unsure when I started loving football but sure it was during my single digit ages are shortly after. My family have always been sports fanatics. My grandparents had season tickets to the Kansas City Kings- now Sacramento Kings- for years. They sat in the same seats on the lower level but last row at the top with their backs against the glass boxed seats. They went for years and could tell you all the players names plus their strengths and weaknesses. They never missed a game so the organization gave them with a plaque and certificate for The Most Faithful fans. My grandfather accepted the award at mid court but my grandmother was not climbing down and back up all the stadium stairs to get the award but was proud of it anyhow. I remember thinking how cool that was for them.
My grandparents would have loved the game yesterday. They watched most sports that came on TV and my mama and auntie still do- basketball and tennis for sure. They always root for the Black coaches or players and feel a sense of pride when one of them win as if they are related to them. Just as the media is making a big deal out of the first two Black coaches to take their teams to the Super Bowl, my grandparents would be having the same conversation with all their friends and family. I can guarantee this will be part of my next conversation with my mama and auntie. It is a huge milestone for America, but I hope the coaches and players are focusing on all the hard work they have done to get there and realize that winning the AFC and NFC divisions had nothing to do with affirmative action or hand-outs.
Now I await invitations to Super Bowl parties. I know a few people with TVs and homes much larger than mine so I will either hint to them to invite us to their party or pray for the invitation. Either way, I will be celebrating with other football fans on Super Bowl Sunday. Who do I want to win- Bears or the Colts? Whoever wants the championship the most!
